Change the question, Discover the difference view
Welcome
Two people can stand in the same place , hear the same words, walk away with completely different ideas. " Why" because we don't experience the world only through our eyes, we also experience it through our memories , expectations , beliefs, emotions and questions. That means something interesting is happening all the time. The way you see something can affect what you believe it means.
This book isn't here to tell you that what to think.
It here to help you become better at thinking about how you think. Ok let begin.
Imagine two people looking through the same window. One sees dark cloud and thinks maybe we'll finally get some rain, the sky didn't change, the interpretation did. We sometimes forget that our first interpretation isn't necessarily the truth. When something happens, pause before deciding what it means. Ask what else could it means ? That question can open doors to a completely different way of seeing things
Mindra pause
Notice ; what happened ?
Question...what are two possible explanation
Choose...which explanation has the strongest evidence?
You don't always have all the information. Your mind often tries to complete the missing pieces. Someone doesn't reply to your message. You might think they angry , but perhaps they busy, perhabr their phones are off. Perhaps they simply haven't seen the message, your first thought can feel like a fact even when it only a guess, that why it helps to separate. What I know from what I assume. That small different can prevent many misunderstanding
Mindra pause
What do I actually know
What am I assuming
What informatin am I missing
A good question can change a conversation, it can uncover an idea, it can reveal a mistake, it can lead you somewhere unexpected, instead of always asking " is this true " try asking "how do we know? Instead of " who is right " try "what evidence do we have instead of "why would they do that " and try what might I not understand about their situation ?" . Curiousity doesn't mean belive every thing. It means being willing to investigate.
Mindra pause
What am I curious about?
What would help me understand it better ?
Find one reliable piece of information.
Your first reaction can be fast, your second thought can be more careful. Imagine someone gives you criticism , your first thought might be "they don't respect me " before reacting pause , could they be trying to help ? , could they have explained themselves badly ? Could there be something useful for what they said ? You don't have to accept every criticism. But you also don't have to reject it immediately. Give your thought a little room, sometimes the best response comes after the first reaction has passed.
Mindra reset
What was my first reaction
What could I think about differently
Respond after you've conserded the situation.
You don't have to agree with someone to understand them. Try looking at a situation from their side. What do they know ? What might be worried about? What experiences could have shaped their opinions? That doesn't mean their view is automatically correct.it means you willing to understand before judging. The world becomes more interesting when you realize that everyone carries a different collection of experience.
Mindra pause
What my view ?
What might another person see that I don't?
Listen before deciding
Not everything you hear deserves your trust, a confidence voice can still be wrong, a popular post can still contains falls information. A person with many followers can still misunderstand something. Before believing an important claim, ask!. Who said it ? How do they know ? Can the information be checked ? Do the trustworthy sources agree?
Thinking carefully doesn't mean becoming suspicious of everything, it means learning to separate information from evidence
Mindra pause
What claim am I hearing ?
What support it?
Chack before passing it on?
Changing your mind can feel uncomfortable, sometimes people think it mean they lost " it doesn't" Imagine you believe something for years. Then you discover strong evidence that shows you were mistaken. You now have two choices, protect the old belief or follow the better information. Being willing to update your thinking is a strength. You don't have to be embarrassed about learning something.
You can simply say " didn't know that before and continue
Mindra pause
What do I strongly believe ?
What evidence could change my mind
Stay opened to learn
One bad experience can make us create a much bigger story, you fail one test and think 🤔" I'm terrible at this" one person disappoint you and think " Nothing ever works for me " be careful with words like.. ;always, never, everyone, nothing
One event Is usually only one piece of a much bigger story, look at the evidence before writing the ending
Mindra pause
Am I making the situation bigger than the evidence
What examples don't fit my conclusion
Describe the situation accurately.
Some decisions needs speed, others deserve time, if you're angry, excited, pressured, or frightened, your emotions can influence your choices. Sometimes the smartest move is simply,
Wait
Take a breath get more information, talk to someone you trust, come back to the decision later. A few minutes of careful thinking can be more valuable than a quick unswer you later regret.
Mindra pause
What am I feeling ?
Do I need to decide now ?
Give important decision enough time.
The way you think shapes the way you learn. If you believe you already know everything, curiousity become smaller, if you're willing to say. Maybe there is more to this, you leaves room for discovery. You don't have to accept every opinion, you don't have to doubt everything, you can be curious and careful, open minded an thoughtful, confident and willing to learn, the balance is powerful. The goal isn't to have an unswer for everything. Sometimes the better achievements is knowing how to ask the right question
I will pause before jumping to conclusions
I will separate fact Frome assumption
I will ask questions
I will listen to different perspective
I will check important information
I will admit when I don't know something
I will change my mind when strong evidence teaches me something new
I will give important decision enough time
I will stay curious
And I will remember
The way I see someone isn't always the only way to see it
What is actually happening ?
What an I assuming
What information am I missing ?
How might someone else understand this
What is the most reasonable conclusion ?
The world is full of things you haven't notice yet, questions you haven't asked, ideas you haven't considered, perspective you haven't heard. You don't need to agree with everyone, you don't need to believe everything, you simply need to remain curious enough to look again , sometimes changing your view doesn't change the world, it changes what you can see in it .
Look deeper. Ask better, think wiser. Take care 👊
